Week 1: Kaldor Contemporary Art Floor: Ways of seeing

Piggyback

It is made out of bronze material shaped into a life like sculpture.
It was created in Spain 1996. It was made by Juan Munoz where he was born in Spain 1953 to 2001. It is a singular piece of work as it is three dimensional and representational where it contains a sense of individuality and purpose.
The figures appear to be moving in motion as the posture of the two individuals seems balanced. It contains a natural appearance of corroded bronze material. From a personal perspective the artwork seems in a neutral and normal position where we don't feel over dominated or in power. The texture of the clothes seems life like and detailed that goes accordingly to the outcome of the figure.
There is a clear contrast between the result of the figure and the facial expression of the individuals where they appear somehow happy or calm as they are having a piggyback ride where they seem to be burned. Through the context, this artwork relates to the findings of the figures discovered in Pompeii when it erupted in 79 AD.

It makes me feel heavy as if it was putting pressure on me due to the weight of the bronze. It is a detailed sculpture made in bronze material and combines two figures in one where a sense of stability is present. It visually expresses a dramatic story and a negative outcome. It portrays a clear contrast between their facial expressions and their current state. This artwork has affected me in a weird way where I feel rusted due to the physical appearance of the two figures and how they are positioned. It has a contrast of good and bad balanced on one scale where it is difficult to determine what is good and bad.

Practical:
I have chosen the Piggyback as my concept in which I have evoked race discrimination where I am replying in a negative way to this artwork. Due to the colour being unknown as it is made out of bronze material, I have decided to distinguish these two colours by making them black and white. The new concept explores the response of how discrimination because of skin colour, was treated both emotionally and physically in society within the Great American depression. I have drawn in coloured pencil on how the rich business man gained wealth and ambition due to thousands of people being unemployed and the salary was seriously unfair for those with darker skin colour. The white people treated them like low lives and with no dignity or respect where they were basically slaves as they were humiliated and ashamed as this type of discrimination was extremely harsh.

Basement Keller Haus u r

I found another contemporary display that captured my attention, the ‘Basement Keller Haus u r’ made by Gregor Scnieder where it was an installation as the materials used were built rooms created in the year 1985 and recreated in 2012. Gregor Schnieder was born in 5th of April of 1969 where he is a German artist who aims to construct rooms where in 2001 he received an award of the Golden Lion at Venice Biennale due to the work of ’Totes Haus u r’. It is a singular work where they are all in one as it is three dimensional and based on reality. It is definitely representational because it create a suspenseful atmosphere where we feel that we are in the presence of a real room based on the reconstruction of the Dead House. As I walked towards this mysterious figure lying on the floor I felt agitated and nervous as I did not know whether this figure was part of the exhibit.
The room had scream coloured walls and a calm ambience where as I saw the door I was intrigued into opening it and saw dim lighted environment as I was approaching a dark and mysterious space in which I have not experienced before in an art gallery. The movement around this space installation was suspenseful as walking around this space was unlike anything I have ever seen. There wasn’t much light as I knew that’s what the artist wanted, to see within the dark where the texture of the walls appeared so real that it resembled the old and historic cellar walls. There is a repetition of walls where it feels like your walking in maze where confusion is depicted.

Photo taken by Valeria Versace at NSW art gallery

I could interact in opening doors and seeing what was behind it where it drove me crazy into not discovering it. This entire installation conveys a narrative where it is dark, gloomy and fear based where it has a negative yet intriguing mood where we travel around the exhibit. There is a clear contrast between the dark cellar and the rest of the Art Gallery where in the beginning it started with a black figure which the transitions into this distinct environment.
We understand that there is a progression from the public environment into an isolated area where each room contains different aspects that involve the political and social characteristics where you are actually within the isolated cellar instead of just looking at it from a picture. You feel surrounded by the walls, floor and ceilings where it creates an emotional response of fear, alienation and nervous. I haven’t seen anything like this before where the artist delivers an entire new atmosphere.

Overall the artwork has a new perspective into isolation and fear, contains a confronting overall sense in the beginning all the way to the end, each wall, floor and ceiling contains a distinct pattern and perception, an inspirational piece influenced by the decor of an old cellar and the interaction that a person can do with the artwork.

Week 2: Modernism-Dandies and Flaneurs

Baudelaire reading:

The writing style and structure of the article (SUMMARY 200-400 WORDS):

The style of the article is detailed and expressive where in the beginning it shows the natural way of understanding the paintings visually without consent. Beauty is a factor that Baudelaire mentions where it closely relates to art in a emotional sense. The article targets people that have a sense for abstract thought.
It is very detailed as the author records different times with various people and the impact of their intuition stat lead to the creation of their paintings.
A dandy is a person who takes time and chooses to move slow in order to capture every detail that passes by. A dandy is mainly a person who does not engage that well with the city. A person who flows within the crowd and observes other people as they walk capturing their lives in a narrative style via photographs.
He states that the word 'artist' is a restricted word whereas 'man of the world' feels more broad and widely spread out.
Mousier G. , his artworks and sketches and watercolours remain without a signature as Mousier G views it as unnecessary where he is not an artist but  man who is discovering the world we live in.
Baudelaire preferably calls him a dandy as he is brave enough to decline the tile ARTIST where Monsieur G is infatuated with his surroundings and the entire world as he is dominated passion due to seeing and feeling.

Baudelaire also discusses the portrayal of women where there are various class categories in which women are categorised in like high class, middle class and low class where he describes and explains briefly the difference between these types of women. He states that they exist for pleasure of the observer rather than their own.

The 8 photos of NEWTOWN

Reflection of my experiences and aims and how I reflected some of Baudelair's ideas.

By attending the excursion and visiting Newtown was a new experience as I haven't in Newtown for years as some things were familiar. I began by taking photographs of objects and things and then to scenarios that involved people and their daily lives. I visited local areas that were filled with moving crowds that gave me the advantage of taking close up, medium and long shots. There was a lot of events going on where everything was a possible chance to capture. There was a lot of traffic which allowed me to capture the crowded and bustling atmosphere that was being created via visual imagery. Understanding Baudelair's concept I realised difference between dandy and the flaneur where capturing people and the surrounding environment provides another meaning if we look closer and at the big picture. I tried different angels and shots to capture the cultural life of people and how each frame would explain a different narrative.

Photo taken by Valeria Versace at Newtown, Sydney.

The first photograph shows a contrast between the busy and fast moving traffic against the slow and patient pace of the crowd where they are moving both backwards and forwards as they stop to take time. It captures an everyday life scenario where people move on quick like the traffic but some take the time to slow down and stop.

The second image portrays three people where two of them are completing their daily job whilst the other figure seems to be patient and exploring the surrounding compared to the other two where they are focused and concentrated not heir job rather than being distracted. Every element in the photograph is on standby.

The third photograph shows a tilted shot of a runway where motion is frozen and we can see the integration of cars and roads where no people are seen as it relates to a mechanical dominance within the streets. I was lucky to capture this shot where there was no sign of people around except the creations that we have made. There is a slight appearance of a green bush where nature is being overruled by man made structures.

The fourth photo shows an individual’s perspective on a traditional building where dominance is portrayed and a sense of conservative elements. The position of the building is in a overpowering position where we as the viewer feel diminished and powerless. The photo shows a medium shot of the building where it appears to be influenced by the leaning tower of Pisa.

The fifth photo displays two individuals passing by and seems relaxed where they walk together having a conversation, ignoring their surroundings but focusing on their lives. The entire frame contains the cars, buildings and objects that we do not pay much attention to. The colour is very dull as there is no sense of happiness just plain days.

The sixth photo I captures a very strong aspect in cultural life as the firetruck is in the main centre of attention as we seem to want to follow where its going as these types of moment is where we realise what is going on and gives us a reboot into looking at our surroundings twice. It conveys action as the truck is heading to stop a fire nearby where it portrays it as a dramatic scene in life.

The seventh image shows a close up of a man delivering goods where this reflects how busy our lives are and how important small jobs can have a go impact on our society and how it works. It reflects the low aspect of life of some sort where the movement is rough and masculine as the boxes appear heavy. The mood created by this is very enervating as the facial expression remains intensive and concentrated as this figure blends in with the environment.

The eighth and final image demonstrates a low perspective of how people walk by where we don't have time to see the top half of the individuals. Here I captured the fast paced movement of people walking by as the bottom half is the most important element where we move constantly from one place to another.

Entry 4: Re-capture photos (week 5)

Within these set of photographs that I have taken within week 5, I have recaptured some more photographs as I did back in week 2 where I have realised that my photos appear more focused and refined than the first set I did in Newtown.

The first photograph gives a sense of perspective and insight onto war we are looking at as the reflection of the window gives us a hint of what we are facing. The symmetrical division of the cement wall and the clear and clear glass depicts a demonstration of clash of difference as when brought together, it shows contrast. In one side we see what is there whilst the other shows another view into another world where it appears detail. My photo shows a level of improvement of more than just simply showing what it is.

The second photo shows a more developed and different angle shot on a particular event where the view is slanted as it gives a different mood and feeling of the surrounding environment where the perplexing atmosphere is taken into detail and consideration. We can see a vanishing point where the perspective is long and limitless in length as the background, middle ground and foreground gives a grey effect of the event that is occurring where the individuals seem to block our perspective of the horizon where it reinforces the meaning of effective impact.

The third image shows a different approach on how people walk into dangerous situations despite there being signs and symbols to signify danger ahead. This close up shot shows a very confronting image where it states DANGER but people challenge this risk and continue on where eventually consequences would be evident in the end. People tend to realise this and some don't.

The fourth photo shows a clash of modern and traditional life where the old building on the left is old, traditional but it contains a sense of purpose as the structure is dominant whereas on the right a sign that states the scull zone shows the modern element that we have in our daily lives. It has a sense of clash between old and new.

The fifth photo displays a tunnel like photo as the contrast of the two colours where a brown colour emerges from the centre bottom line. We can immediately see a vanishing point where a sense of distance is portrayed. This photo can show the industrial workforce of builders where generally these colours represent them as they are bright and recognisable. We feel like we are in this tunnel and are heading to an opening where freedom and light is waiting on the other end.

The sixth photo shows a closeup shot of an object where we see something incomplete. This photo shows a zoomed in shot where we see clearly the object being surrounded constructive objects as it clashes with the dark gravel of the ground. We can feel a sense of determination of attempting to fix a problem in life like this object.

Summary of Benjamin’s reading

A work of art could be replicated by various individuals like student’s exploring their inner craftsmanship and third parties in the pursuit of gain. Throughout the creation and evolution of printing, it has changed how people read, communicate and absorb knowledge as within the middle ages, etchings was modern as until the 19th century lithography was introduced. Afterwards lithography was overpowered by photography as this was a new turn into technological advances. However replicas cannot communicate or share the same sense of aura as it is not looking at the original but instead a copy. The original copies share their place in time where it makes it unique and we understand how long ago it was made and how elements in art has evolved since then.
If we saw a real version of a painting or some sort, our connection and link to that painting changes by simply looking at it within the internet as we feel the energy and spirituality of the artwork via visual imagery. The use of the mechanical reproduction has its positives and negatives as it an share with others around the world where they cannot attend to see it in in reality but also we cannot experience the real thing as the portrayal of that artwork cannot be replicated a thousand times as the original is the only one that contains a sense of familiarity and experiencing the truth rather than a photograph of it as we become more interested if it is the original copy.
However this kind of process has lead to a tremendous shatter of tradition where contemporary art was questioned.

I took a few extra photos where here I focus more on the people and the flow of the crows as the medium shots visually explain their thoughts through their postures and way of seeing. The angled shot of the first image shows a dizzy feeling as it seems that we are part of their perspective and the physical feeling of their image that is being taken. The difference between these nee sets of photos, is that the previous shots were mainly focusing on the object and structure as well as the activities of the individuals. But now, you can see more clarity and focus in all parts of our lives and our surroundings.

Entry 5: Theory of Montage 'Potemkin' (week 5)

Montage:
The straightforward definition of a montage is an action or technique that selects, edits and combines these elements together with separate sections of a film and forms a flowing and continuous movement and whole. Montages are often presented within sequences of events that usually are depicted passing time in a contextual form where we as the viewer can sense the events that occur during those specific time periods as change and transition are also evident. In terms of film, we can understand the process of different shots of camera angles where it captures different feelings, moods and meanings as when joined together it creates another different persecutive on the current situation that allows the viewer to be heavily impacted either negatively or positively.

Written and summarised by Valeria Versace 2013.

REFLECTION OF OWN PHOTO MONTAGES:
Here I have created a montage based on work at university where the pressure and passing of time occurs as the individual struggles to present their concept and how to communicate their work to the audience. The series of images portray this caption as a more intriguing sequence of images can tell as story when united together. My creation of the montage is based on a third persons and first person perspective where we can see what the individual is seeing as well seeing themselves. The images are placed in black and white where there is an emphasis between the the lightness and the darkness. The combination of different images creates a believable montage as dedication and determination to succeed is evident within these set of images.
Within this type of montage, I have used the rhythmic technique where it follows a series of events that are tied together with similar shots as it shows a personal persecutive as well as a third person perspective on the event that is occurring. I found it particularly interesting to convey a montage besides simple shots that contain visual imagery but also the feeling and awareness of what this montage is about and why is it shown like this. Making sense out of this montage is a mere expression of understanding of how a sequence of events can explain various informative things that requirers critical attention.

Entry 6: Re-capture photos (week 6)

Entry 6: Postmodern +post postmodern - (Museum of Contemporary art) (week 7)

2. The work, eXoeroacXis, made in 2005 by Nick Mangan was made by resin, perplex, carpet, wood and synthetic polymer.

b. The artist was born on 1979 Geelong Victoria where he currently lives and works in Melbourne. Within the information card alongside the artwork, it states that the artwork is built from cast bones and handmade crystals that pierce through a Persian rug. It contains bowls that appear to be eaten by termites as this clearly states that he is interested in the process of decomposition and renewal.

c. Since it is a 3D installation, the shapes and textures are very intriguing and engaging as the shapes of the bones are uneven and placed randomly as decompositions the major factor that makes the installation feel intense and confronting. The space around this object has boundaries as from a medium distance we can already feel the natural feeling of decaying already occurring. I feel that this artwork has continuous and rhythmic movement as we can feel the act of the natural process where the colours are ominous, dull and life itself is being taken away. The installation is positioned in a central layout where the light is shown from above where it gives great emphasis and there is a clash between the darkness of the ground and the lightness of the ceiling which reinforces the intense atmosphere. By looking at it, we can tell there is a narrative where the end result is devastating and shocking as the bones symbolise death and the end of life.

d. The artist’s concept is complex yet understandable if close attention and realisation is utilised, where the decomposition and renewal is the major element within his work where he expresses a confronting perspective on life and the order of natural process. The selected use of media of a 3D installation is far more convincing and effective than a painting version of this artwork because we can feel the atmosphere, mood and the presence of the artwork. He explores a cultural aspect where the Persian rug gives us an insight of cultural devastation via the visual realisation of the termites eating the hand crafted bowls. I haven’t seen a work so engaging and intriguing to look and understand it a well as connect with the artwork.

e. I could capture some cultural meanings like using different various cast bones and uniting them in random positions to give the meaning of different cultural visual elements where it would explore the difference in cultural societies but the bones would unite them together as one because they are the same. Or perhaps instead of bones, I could use some other materials that could express the same ending if I had the chance to create a re-imaged work that captures this particular theme.

Photo taken by Valeria Versace at the Museum of Contemporary Art 2013.

Exoecoaxis: (research):
Nick Mangan uses the materials and objects from both the natural world and the man made world where this combines and creates into unusual and engaging three dimensional installations that allows the viewer to think about his main concept. The artwork gives a spiritual and mysterious atmosphere where both the ordinary and the foreign are brought together in unity and creates an evocative composition.
The installation generally intends to invite the viewer where it makes them feel part of the work and have an emotional impact.
He examines the historical context of specific objects where he then deconstructs it and then creates new meanings out of it via visual display.
What matters mainly to Nick Mangan is the idea of renewal through the act of disintegration where the cultural and natural aspects are processed which creates a reconfiguration of the intended object therefore creating another meaning that requires a high level of comprehension from a subjective and objective perspective. His work questions mainly the link between the organic and inorganic combining contrasting elements together and creating a distinct result.

Exoecoaxis: (reflection):
By seeing this art display, I felt very engaged with the installation as it provided a sense of encounter as it was an entirely new perspective on cultural and social aspects in life. By viewing this artwork, it has an atmosphere tat is being taken away like the last breath you take when death is near. The long brown handmade decorative spear like stick, seems to be connecting with the ground in which the bones and crystal objects appear to link together via physical encounter as it shows perhaps the human spiritual being being hidden within the bones as it is rising up to leave the reality. The white bones are randomly yet carefully positioned in certain postures where it gives a feeling of tension and mysterious as it could signify a symbolic meaning.
The carpet adds a balanced notion where stability is formed as the entire artwork is not only based on death and disintegration but it relates to culture as well. The spikes that emerge from the ground connect the land of the earth together with the slow decaying of life through the visual representation of the bones.
The atmosphere that this artwork generated was intense and confronting as the posture, choice of materials and the subject matter has an emotional impact on the audience as realisation of the truth in life is both good and bad where this might help me in my final re-imaging project where capturing the desired feeling within a visual representation as this could create a more engaging connection between the viewer and the work itself.

PRACTICAL:

For this artwork, it is a 3D installation where the bones are the main attraction as well as the way it is positioned. My idea is to critique this meaning where I want to portray the idea of decomposition but in reverse where it would be restoration as I placed semi complete dinosaur bones to the entire visual context where it signifies the ancient fossil bones regenerating thus critiquing his idea. It is like the natural process but in reverse where the dinosaur bones appear to be alive and rising from the sunken ground as different sections of the body parts are rising up. I will probably select this re imaged work as part of my choice in deciding which artwork I will re-image in the final stage of this project.

Entry 7: Re-Imaging Concept Trials

Annotation of modernism
Modernism was based on the rejection and authority in favour of reason and natural science. They believed in the future where technology and science were the key into creating this perfect future. They believed that things were going to get better through these changes where looking back to the past was not important.
Form follows function where it is non decorative and based on structure and truth, newness and utopia. It is singular aesthetic, universal and international where it looks forward to the future.

Annotation of postmodernism
Postmodernism rejected the main importance of the individual within the 18th and 19th centuries as they focused on the combination of the past, present and future as it did not only they created unusual creations but memorable things.
Postmodernism displays irony and appropriation.
An example of postmodernism is the coca colas used in art where both the artists Ai Wei Wei and Andy Warhol’s coca cola bottles have created similar meanings based on a cultural and iconic image where it is clear that it puts old, young together.

New things are created and constructed through other things. Postmodernist theory emerged from the modernist and structuralist thinking where postmodern art can be also represented in a parody form like the Dali style by Matt Groening where the artist is using appropriation in his work where it takes a famous artwork made by Salvador Dali and replicates it into another form of meaning but using the similar concept used in the original.

Salvador Dali: Birth of Geopoliticus child
Within this surrealist painting it is very confronting and curious where the man emerging from the inside of an egg like object shows a very intriguing and shocking portrayal. Within the original painting that I have elected, I have decided to use the same method of the birth of the world where I have converted this to a political aspect where instead of something good and positive emerging from the egg, negative visual aspects of society are being produced where we can see the destruction of buildings, events that lead towards war between different countries, and the power of corruption that leads to a breakdown society and so on. It explore the negative aspects that we have in our world today that affects our lifestyle and the way we live as these things can cause havoc and crime which is evident in every single country in the world. The egg itself seems to be breaking because of the negative visual elements being produced and generated. It also appears to be bleeding as these aspects cause emotional disaster as it just explodes and the egg cracks open. This signifies the birth of our negative actions.

Political meaning (visual):
For this sketch, I have displayed the birth of the negative visual things that have occurred and still occurs in our lives today like violence, global warming, pollution and destruction where it reflects the negative aspects of our history in which they are exploding from the cracked egg. It has a meaning of irony because an egg is usually something joyful, happy and welcoming whereas here, it has a negative implication as the egg begins to drip due to the things being contained.

Image drawn by Valeria Versace 2013.

Political meaning (written):
This version of concept from Salvador Dali’s painting shows the political meaning being reinforced and understood clearly as the world egg cracks open and all the negative words sprout out to communicate to the audience that these negative elements are being generated into our world because of our immoral actions where it causes the world to crack and become weak. I have chosen selected font typefaces for each of the words to highlight its significance and meaning as well as the impact it has on the reader as it makes them understand that not only our world is glorious and marvellous but also it has a dark side to it as it can be full of crime and violence. It has a sense of juxtaposition where the earth is beautiful yet filled with these negative elements that makes it bleed and have small cracks around the surface.

Agitprop poster:
Political propaganda, especially favouring communism and disseminated through literature, drama, art, or music.
This agitprop version that I have created depicts a political propaganda where Adolf Hitler has been utilised to bring the poster together. It has been inspired by rodchenko where the advertisement for poster for the Lengiz Publishing House was politically engaging as it motivated me into creating a political poster as well that is confronting and effective.

Sjabloon Awesome Inc, 2013, The modernism, blog, viewed on 2nd of January 2013.

My re-image of this poster It shows the power and aggression of the communist party where it displays Hitler in an enlarged image and as the main focus where the war tanks are emerging from his arm pit in an angle and he is repeatedly displayed on them screaming and making a strong statement. The title ‘All hail the rain of metal’ refers to the hard work done that he has accomplished and how the tanks look like rain drops but made out of metal where it signifies the authority and the potency of the Nazi political party in a humorous way. The image of Hitler is so intense and overpowering that we feel diminished by the position of the visual elements placed within the frame. The colour red is a symbol of power, rage and war where it supports the meaning of destruction and violence.

Poster designed by Valeria Versace 2013.

Postmodern: (The landing of Captain Cook at Botany bay 1770):
Daniel Boyd has created an appropriation of the painting The landing of Captain Cook at Botany Bay 1770 by E.Phillips Fox in 1902. He responds to this artwork in depicting the moment of invasion and the conquest made by Captain Cook over the original inhabitants of the land. He has re-worked a significant painting that determines a memorable moment in history where the birth of Australia began. He examines the colonial narratives in Australian art where he depicts the brave and independent dominance of Captain Cook and his confrontations with the native aboriginal people.

Boyd gets his inspiration from the late 18th and 19th century paintings where he has created a work that visually highlights his interpretation on his form of portrayal where it creates an intriguing and provocative painting. He has changed the symbolic reference of the flag symbol and the clothing of the settlers as they are portrayed as pirates. In the original artwork by Phillips Fox we see that Captain Cook symbolises the traditional and civilised English culture but in Boyd’s we understand that he is seen as the pirate who conquers through power and dominance.

'We call them pirates out here', 2006, Daniel Boyd, Oil on Canvas, image taken by Valeria Versace at Museum of Contemporary Art, 2013.

Re imaging a Postmodern work:
For this example of re-imaging a postmodern work, I have placed the title 'We call them aliens out here' where the exaggeration of the word 'aliens' defines a more subjective perspective on how the indigenous people of Australia have sent he coming of the White British people and how they reacted. I placed the context into a more ancient perspective where I sketched out four individuals and there were three of them versus one as it appears more violent and brutal. The facial expressions appear more confronting and series as it feels threatening and a force of evil surrounding it.

Entry 8: Final Visual Concepts

1.
Newtown, Old Town by Jgor Cavallina:
The photograph that I took early in week 1 captured my attention because of the composition of the photograph and the visual context of the image itself. Due to the selected colour format of the photograph, it gives an old feeling where we feel that we are being transported back in time to see the difference of this town from then till now. The figure in the centre provides an eerie visual understanding where we are curious and intrigued into finding out who this person and why the photographer captured the photo with the person in the focal centre.

My idea for re-imaging the work:
For this photograph, I would make a photo journal that extends this idea of curiosity an mystery where I would insert the photos that connect or share this idea. It would communicate the meaning of how this feeling and atmosphere can be captured though different angles that give separate perspectives, yet remain the same. I was planning into uniting these photographs together where they provide the deeper meaning of how a person's journey is like and the obstacles that confront them along the way. The drawing I made at the bottom shows a similar perspective of the original photo where the difference is that we are positioned at the bottom and the road leads in an upper position where the distant end seems mysterious as well as the original work. The various people being portrayed shows how similar people's journey can be where in the end we all belong within the same place. Somehow this idea for my final was still being decided where I was sure that I was not aiming towards this direction.

2.
Basement Haus Keller u r by Gregor Schnieder:
Since this artwork installation is based on the feeling and ambiance of mystery and suspense through the interaction the individual has, I have decided to further extend this meaning of linking and connecting with the individual in order to make them feel immersed within the environment through a movie.
I want to use the technique of montage inspired by the shower scene of Psycho, where I would portray these elements of the installation through a video but in extensive demonstration. I want to extend the feel visual impact of how you can understand from another perspective as you begin to experience what the individual is going through. I am thinking of including the theme of self discovery and misinterpretation where the individual does not understand herself, therefore she sees herself in different yet horrifying ways that she does not comprehend. Every single frame that passes throughout the video would explore the suspense and insecurity that she feels within this environment, the garage, as it transitions from a public environment to a more alienated place that matches what she is experiencing. The camera would capture parts of the individual like beginning with the feet and slowly rising up to reveal the character. I did some sketches into what I have in mind. I feel like I want to go with this idea as it has a relationship with the artwork that I have chosen as well as the idea that I have in mind.

The storyboard:

Re imaging the BASEMENT (storyboard):
I have chosen to re image the Basement Keller Haus u r by Gregor Schnieder where the technique that I will use to re image this is creating a video that is based on the concept of fear, curiosity and nightmare as well as confusion.
Since this artwork installation is based on the feeling and ambiance of mystery and suspense through the interaction the individual has, I have decided to further extend this meaning of linking and connecting with the individual in order to make them feel immersed within the environment through a movie.
I want to use the technique of montage inspired by the shower scene of Psycho, where I would portray these elements of the installation through mine but in extensive demonstration.
I have created a rough storyboard on how I would visually communicate my idea of the basement but taken into a townhouse garage as it is the same as a basement but more spacious and shared among the owners of the place. This storyboard involves the different camera shots of different angles which are focusing on the individual and what she is experiencing when she goes within the garage. I have written some notes on each frame explaining what would happen there and how it makes sense as as storyboard.

What I am aiming for within this re imaging work is that I want to capture the intended feeling that the original artwork installation makes the audience feel and understand where in mine I want them to understand it visually through immersing themselves within the video and feel the intense and unexpected side of the artwork. As we follow the individual and see that the person does not understand themselves as throughout the film there are misunderstandings about herself. In the final climax, we finally see the person and she confronts her negative self where the mirror is portrayed as she looks at herself and realises that there is nobody else and nothing else except for herself.

Feedback from tutor on 'Basement Haus Keller u r' concept:
I received critical feedback from my tutor where he supported my theory of the video that shows the rough idea that I have in mind. He advised me to focus on the concept of the video where how this relates to the original work and how am I going to communicate this idea within a video. He stated to use the dark intensity and the atmosphere that I am filming within where I want to reinforce the idea of the artist where it is based on the dark exploration of one's self. He advised me to continue the process that I am taking as I need to develop the video more and further refine it.

Rationale:

Throughout this project much was learnt and experienced where within this course, I did not recognise it at first where I began to understand the main aim throughout this course. It was interesting to learn new things and other negative challenges that blocked my way into achieving what I wanted. Throughout this entire transition from basic to expert, I have halted at the final stage of producing a short clip movie that reflected what I observed from the world that surrounds me and continued to embrace the new expression of re imaging.
The video is based on the artwork installation that I saw and experienced in the Art Gallery of NSW where it captivated my attention through an eerie glimpse of what would emerge from this artwork.
Throughout the diary that I have completed each of the entries throughout the weeks, has allowed me to keep in track of my time management and how I would begin by choosing the correct format for the final section of my final project of this course.
The main concept of the video reflects and further extends the meaning of the isolated atmosphere, fear and overpowered. I have focused on the concept of a girl, transitioning from a public and outer environment into an enclosed and congested eerie environment as she begins to experience various things where it makes us understand that she doesn’t understand her self and she begins to uncover bits of her in dark and horrifying ways in which she doesn’t understand at first but learns through the experience.
The place is set in a dark garage where it resembles a basement but in a more wider space with more interactions as it reflects an ordinary every day life place. Through the hard work of making this movie a believable one and reflected what I have experienced within the original installation, I was certain that I would place this movie in my personal perspective and linking this between the work and audience.
Through the feedback made by my tutor, I felt more confident as he advised me to keep refining the video and making it shorter in order to sustain the suspense when viewing it. I agreed completely where it was helpful for me to realise the small errors that I had to adjust. Overall my final work reflects the dedication and challenging yet enjoyable process that I have learnt throughout the semester.

Reflection :

My reaction to this project was half great and half not great where there were some certain things that I didn’t like about the assignment where I found some sections difficult to cooperate. The final visual re imaging work has resulted in an excellent final work where I am proud to have completed this form of task. I felt that my diary provided me with enough insight and understanding of what I would place within the final work. It helped strengthen my ideas and motivated me enough to produce
The purpose of the numbers that are shown in a countdown format, is to show how numbers in Roman Numerals relate to time and in this case the different ways in which the girl uncovers herself. It gives her a hint or guidance into what’s heading towards her and what must be done to overcome this challenge. Another thing that bothered was the length of time of the video where it started from 3 minutes to six minutes and a half and then four minutes where I was trying to still contain the suspense of this short clip as it could not be possible and would probably fail if it was longer than the one I have created. I felt that the voiceovers explained the difficulties in life that the girl experiences where it makes it a bit personal as we hear it as mumbling but actual words are being said. We see the entire suspenseful atmosphere from different angles and perspective which involves from the girl’s perspective and the other girl’s perspective where a combination seemed interesting to combine together in order to create a more dramatic and terror.
The camera captured shots starting from the feet to the whole figure where it created a sense of mystery as to who she is and it also reinforces the concept of her not knowing who she is as she is puzzled and perplexed. As soon as we see the film, parts of her body begin to reveal like the legs, arms, shoulders and hands and at the final stage the entire face as well as the figure is revealed showing the confidence that she was missing from the start. Overall I wanted the audience to experience a more intense and unexpected viewpoint where they would immerse themselves into believing what is real and what’s not.

Entry 9: Seminar Visuals/ Reflection (Week 10 Punk and Pop presentation slides):

Below are the extra notes I had in hand whilst delivering our group presentation:

The Seminar:
Within this seminar, the process that I have learnt about the topic Pop and Punk in more depth where it was interesting to know that pop had affected both culturally, socially and politically where it reaches to entertainment music, fashion and art especially where it was an entirely new development in history. As well as punk, it has evolved from punk where the music and fashion has emerged from the social movement after the Queen's Jubilee when there was a rise of unemployment due to political issues in the UK. The music and fashion has liberated the social class into expressing what they thought and believed in. It was truly interesting of the historical context of pop and punk.
With the collaboration of my group partner, we have equally distributed our duties of researching the topic where we have come together into combing our notes and learning each other's work as well. Time management was no problem as we have finished it before the deadline. Overall it was interesting to know about the lecture topic and then further discuss and explain it to the class where it provided me with a more border understudying to the topic selected.
